What is a Solar Storm

♦A solar storm is a natural phenomenon referring to the violent eruptive activities on the Sun and the series of intense disturbances they trigger in the space between the Sun and the Earth. It is caused by solar flare eruptions and coronal mass ejections, which release substantial amounts of energy and matter like electromagnetic radiation, high-energy particles, and magnetized plasma clouds.
♦Solar storms have several characteristics. They are periodic, with more frequent and intense occurrences during solar maximum years when sunspot activities are high. They are also sudden, making it difficult to precisely predict the specific time and intensity of an eruption. Additionally, their impacts show regional differences based on factors like the complex changes in near-Earth space environment and the area directly irradiated by the Sun.

Impacts of Solar Storms
On Satellite Communication: They can disrupt radio signals, causing attenuation or interruption of shortwave radio signals, reducing the accuracy of satellite navigation, and degrading the signal-to-noise ratio and increasing the bit error rate of satellite communication.
On Power Systems: Severe solar storms may lead to power grid failures. For instance, in 1989, a solar storm caused a major power outage in Quebec, Canada, leaving millions of residents without electricity for over 9 hours.
On Astronauts and Spacecraft: The high-energy charged particles in solar storms can penetrate spacecraft, causing radiation damage to astronauts and spacecraft components, and may even lead to spacecraft failure.

Impact of Solar Storms on Solar Inverters
The intense electromagnetic fields and high-energy particles in solar storms can induce electrical surges and interference in the circuitry of solar inverters. This may damage sensitive electronic components such as capacitors, transistors, and microcontrollers, resulting in malfunctions or complete failure of the inverter. Moreover, magnetic field fluctuations can affect the inverter's ability to synchronize with the grid, leading to power quality issues and potential tripping of circuit breakers.
